2019 - 2020 LITTLE POLLUTION PREVENTER Art Contest

In September 2019, we asked students from PK- 5th grade to design a new downstream friend for Gurgle and show how pollution impacted that animal. The animal had to live around Memphis waterbodies and they had to identify that waterbody. We also asked them to come up with a slogan to prevent pollution and encourage citizens to adopt a storm drain. We received 57 entries this year from 3 schools (White Station, Whitehaven, and Westside Elementary) in addition to an individual entry! The students displayed a lot talent, creativity, and knowledge of the subject matter! Our art was judged on creative content, contrast, detail, factual content, and legibility. They also needed to be mindful of copyright to be a published artist. From this, we recognized 2 published artists, 1 runner up, 5 finalists and 2 honorable mention participants. However, EVERY entry submitted will receive an award medal for helping to prevent storm water pollution with their artwork…they are ALL winners!

One of our published artists was selected from the PK- 2nd age group and one from the 3rd-5th grade age group. Our two winners, Earnestine Hatton from White Station Elementary PreK and Deisel’e Isom from Whitehaven Elementary 5th Grade, had their art displayed on a billboard, printed in magazines, and will be featured in our upcoming commercials in 2021! Their downstream friend will also be featured in upcoming Gurgle comic strips later in 2020. Thanks to all our teachers, parents, and students!
